On August 26th, 2018 a single person changed the dialogue about video game culture and gaming events in Jacksonville, Florida. Friends, families, and the community are still recovering from the repercussions of the tragedy – and the team at WasabiCon and Green Mustard Entertainment, Inc. have been monitoring the situation very closely.
Since last month, we have had conversations with the Jacksonville’s Sheriff’s Office, the Lexington Hotel and Conference Center, and Visit Jacksonville in regards to our operational plans in light of recent events. We’re very happy to say that our infrastructure was already in place for convention safety prior to the incident at the Jacksonville Landing. That said, we felt it important to share some things. JACKSONVILLE SHERIFF’S OFFICE
In addition to the hotel’s in house security, WasabiCon will be paying for uniformed officers to be on-site during WasabiCon 2018. This was something that was implemented last year that we are repeating. Please be sure to say hi to these officers when you see them and thank them for being there! PROP CHECK
As with previous years, all props (replica weapons, etc.) must follow the event guidelines listed on our website and registration forms: http://wasabicon.com/policies#weapons. If, upon inspection, one of our trained staff is still unsure about your prop we will defer to one of the uniformed officers from JSO to review it. THE LEXINGTON HOTEL & CONFERENCE CENTER
While WasabiCon is a private event, the conference center is shared space with hotel guests. This does create certain limitations in regards to what can and cannot be done regarding non-convention attendees passing through, but we are working with the host property to minimize this as much as possible. SAFETY TRAINING
All WasabiCon staff will be provided with important emergency management training prior to the event opening its doors. This will include emergency exit information, procedures during a crisis, and other elements to help enhance mindfulness of a safe convention environment. VISITOR SAFETY IN JACKSONVILLE
Jacksonville, Florida is home to some of the most amazing people, businesses, and organizations we’ve had the pleasure of working with in this industry. A couple of comments have been made online about questioning attending WasabiCon in Jacksonville due to safety. As a result, we’d like to share this statement from Visit Jacksonville: Jacksonville is a major metropolitan city welcoming more than 20 million overnight and daily visitors each year, like every other major city, we encourage all visitors to be aware of their surroundings and practice common sense in all areas. Despite isolated incidents, Downtown Jacksonville has the lowest incidence of crime in Jacksonville with a dedicated team of JSO (Jacksonville Sheriff Officers) patrolling at all times. Additionally, JSO regularly deploys extra officers Downtown for ongoing special events including conventions, community and holiday events, parades, races and sporting events. Downtown Ambassadors also monitor the Downtown area to help visitors feel safer. They are available for escorts upon request. SEE SOMETHING; SAY SOMETHING
In addition to WasabiCon’s anti-harassment policies (http://wasabicon.com/policies – Convention Rules, #3) – we encourage our attendees to feel comfortable approaching our staff, on-site security, and law enforcement at our event. If you see something, say something. We want our convention to be a SAFE environment where everyone can have FUN. QUESTIONS?
Please feel free to contact us via email ([email protected]) or at the office of Green Mustard Entertainment: (407) 536-9272.

Justin “Fred” Reed, artist and propmaker, is a featured contestant on the series premier of Syfy’s new transformation competition COSPLAY MELEE – an epic showdown of creativity, eye popping costumes and one of a kind characters. Premiering on Tuesday, March 21 at 10/9C, the hour-long battle is hosted by actress and self-described “super fan girl” Yvette Nicole Brown (“The New Edition Story”, “Community”) and executive produced by Jay Peterson and Todd Lubin of Matador Content (“Lip Sync Battle”).
Each week, four world class cosplayers compete to create not only intricate full-body costumes – but fully-formed characters that they must bring to life through their own realistic performance. Guiding and critiquing them are a panel of judges including world class cosplayer LeeAnne Vamp, and A-list costume creator, Christian Beckman (“The Hunger Games”, “TRON: Legacy”). At the end of every episode, the winner will walk away with $10,000… and the right to claim cosplay supremacy.
When not starring on cool TV shows, Fred is a professional wargame miniature painter with over twenty years of experience. Before becoming a painter, Fred was a member of the British Army’s Royal Logistics Corp. After being medically discharged in 1992, he joined the team at Games Workshop (GW) in Bristol, UK, as a sales assistant. He worked his way through to a regional manager where he oversaw more than thirty stores throughout Europe. During his time with GW, he perfected his figure painting skills and won the Golden Demon staff award for painting and began to produce life-size props. After eight years with GW, he branched out and started his own figure painting company and built his worldwide business with clients on every continent.
In 2004, Fred met his wife, Elle, through a mutual love of figure painting and all things nerdy. After proposing to her in a drunken online chat at 2pm Eastern Standard Time, she accepted his proposal (the following morning after a blood alcohol test) and he moved to the United States in 2006. They married and resided in St. Mary’s, Georgia, for two years before relocating to Jacksonville, Florida. During that time, they discovered their love of cosplay and costuming and Fred took his talent for painting to the cosplay world, creating a portfolio of award-winning costumes. When not sewing ornate and elaborate gowns for cosplay, Elle is saving the planet as the Executive Director of an environmental nonprofit in Ponte Vedra Beach, hosts her own weekly radio show on WSOS 103.9 in St. Augustine, and watches Sci-Fi with their dogs, Dotsie and Creamy.
Countess Alyx began cosplaying in 2009. The love for costuming began with her love of theater and performance. Her first cosplay was in 2009 as Namine from Kingdom Hearts II which was handmade and simple in design. She debuted it at Anime Festival Orlando. Alyx has always had a love of animation and in her early cosplay days many of her cosplays consisted of anime and cartoon characters. There’s something so fun about taking something drawn simply and interpreting every detail to the character’s personality and timeline. Alyx is also a huge fan of makeup artistry and looks to bring a new challenge to her cosplay wardrobe every year. Her first cosplay to use prosthesis was Steven Universe’s Pearl in 2016. Since exploring newer avenues in makeup through cosplay Alyx has taught several cosplay and SFX makeup classes for young cosplayers in the North Florida area. Alyx has been featured in several cosplay magazines as well as a calendars and is an award winning cosplayer in the state of Florida

From DeLa Doll’s website: “I’m DeLa Doll! I’m a cosplayer, blogger, mom, and college student. I’ve always been a huge nerd with a serious artsy streak, constantly reading, gaming, writing, and crafting from as early as I can remember. In December 2014, my cosplay journey officially began and I quickly became addicted! Since then, my skills and experiences have expanded to the point that I began to document them in my blog, leading to my articles and cosplay creations being featured in publications like The Huffington Post and sites like Geek Girls. A lot of my writing focuses on diversity and inclusion, media reviews, and my thoughts pertaining to cosplay and nerd culture. As far as my cosplay goes, I really like to cosplay characters I love and identify with characters with unique designs, and my own original designs for for new and old characters! The outpouring of support I’ve received for all of these things is more than I could have imagined, and it makes me happy to know that I am inspiring others by doing things that I enjoy. “

A live action role-playing game (LARP) is a form of role-playing game where the participants physically portray their characters.[1] The players pursue goals within a fictional setting represented by the real world while interacting with each other in character. The outcome of player actions may be mediated by game rules or determined by consensus among players. Event arrangers called gamemasters decide the setting and rules to be used and facilitate play.
Locally based LARP group Dystopia Rising offers a fully immersive experience set in a post-apocalyptic zombie infested world. They are planning on running short story open to attendees Saturday night in the Cosplay Events room. This is a great opportunity for fans who have been curious about this unique and exciting RPG experience!
